Is PVC Fencing for you?
-
Most people don’t pick a fence because they love fences. They pick one because the old one has become a job.
It starts small. A paling splits. The stain fades. A post goes soft at the base, and one windy night the whole run starts to lean. Every summer you tell yourself you’ll deal with it, and every summer something else comes first.
PVC fencing takes that job away.
No more weekends of scraping and staining. It’s made to be left alone.
No rot. PVC isn’t wood, so it has nothing to rot.
No splinters. Smooth surfaces suit kids, dogs and bare feet.
A finished look from day one. You get the warmth of timber in a woodgrain finish, or a clean white or beige.
Less money on upkeep over time. PVC usually costs more at the start, but you stop paying for stain, paint and repairs.
Our customers don’t choose PVC fencing because its cheap, they choose it because it buys them back time to spend where it matters.

Say “plastic fence” and many people picture something thin and cheap. Here’s what a good PVC fence actually is, how it’s made, and how to tell a good one from a poor one.
The short version:
PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, the same family of rigid plastic used for pipes and window frames. A PVC fence (some people call it a vinyl fence) is made from posts, rails and panels shaped from this material in a factory and then installed on your property. It doesn’t need painting and it doesn’t rot.
What’s inside it:
A PVC fence starts as a white powder resin that’s mixed with stabilisers, UV inhibitors and impact modifiers. Each ingredient has a job.
PVC resin is the base material.
Titanium dioxide and UV inhibitors protect it from the sun. Without titanium dioxide, vinyl is very susceptible to UV rays, which can weaken and discolour it.
Impact modifiers help it resist cracking when it’s knocked.
Stabilisers protect the material from heat while it’s made. Heat stabilisers and colour pigments are part of the blend.
The ingredients are mixed, heated and pushed out (extruded) into long lengths, similar to lumber. Those lengths are cut, drilled and packed as posts, rails and panels.
One layer or two?
PVC fencing is made in two common ways:
One material all the way through. The colour is the same from surface to core.
A tough core with a protective outer layer. This is called co-extrusion, and the inner layer is mixed with modifiers that help stop it cracking. The outer layer gives extra UV protection.

A PVC fence system is made up of posts, rails, panels, caps and gates that fit together. The privacy kits come in 1.8 m by 1.8 m sections. Matching gates are available for every style.
How it behaves in real life
We’ll be straight about this, because it helps you decide.
In the sun. In a 1000-hour accelerated UV test, the woodgrain panel showed only slight colour change.
In the wind. Vinyl fence is made to stand up to specified wind loads if it’s installed according to the instructions. A full privacy panel was lab-tested to about 100 km/h of wind pressure.
In hot and cold weather. Like any material, PVC moves slightly with temperature, and good installers allow for it. Lower-grade PVC can become brittle and crack under hard impact in extreme cold. That’s one reason quality and the warranty matter.
Knocks and scratches. It’s tough, but not unbreakable. A big impact, such as a vehicle, can break it, and a line trimmer can scratch it.
Cleaning. Wash it with a hose and mild soap.

Quality varies between products. Wall thickness and ingredients both affect strength, and many cheap panels are made from thin material that can crack or chip. So ask five questions of any PVC fence supplier, including us:
Has it been independently tested, and can I see the reports? Ours has been lab tested. (Please ask for the reports)
What UV protection is built in? The woodgrain panel passed the 1000-hour UV test with only slight colour change.
Is it capable of 100km/h winds? In a lab test, a full privacy fence panel resisted a load equal to about 100 km/h of wind pressure without failing.
What does the warranty cover, in writing? 5 year product warranty, 3 year workmanship warranty
Who installs it, and to whose specification? Avodah Landscape installs it, to the manufacturer’s specification.
-
It suits you if you want low upkeep, you’re staying put, and you want privacy that looks good every day.
Timber may suit you better if your budget is tight, you’re selling soon, or you’re on a shared boundary where your neighbour only has to pay for a standard fence. We’ll quote both so you can compare real numbers.
Choose your Style
Clarity buys Confidence
We won’t promise what we can’t back up. The product carries a [5-year] warranty covering brittleness, cracking and fading. Lab tests simulate sun and heat, but nothing replaces time in the field, which is why we put the warranty in writing.
How long will it last?
1
PVC is tough, but not unbreakable. A hard impact can break it, and lower-grade PVC can become brittle in extreme cold, so quality like ours and correct installation both matter.
Can it crack in the cold or from a knock?
2
In a lab test, a full privacy panel resisted a load equal to about 100 km/h of wind pressure without failing, but its top rail cracked when the load rose about 19% higher. So it’s built for strong wind, not unbreakable. We install to the manufacturer’s specification, and if your site is very exposed, we’ll tell you before we quote.
Is it capable of handling 100 km/h winds?
3
Will it fade or turn yellow?
4
UV protection is built in. In a 1000-hour accelerated UV test, the woodgrain panel showed only slight colour change. Lab tests don’t replace years in your yard, so any PVC will change a little with age.
Is it safe for kids and pets?
5
Lab tests on the panel found no detectable lead, cadmium or mercury, and none of the common phthalates. The surfaces are smooth, with no splinters.
Do I have to paint or maintain it?
6
No painting or staining. For cleaning, wash it with a hose and mild soap.
How much does it cost compared to timber, and who pays on a shared boundary?
7
PVC usually costs more on day one, but you stop paying for stain, paint and repairs. On a shared boundary, your neighbour usually only has to contribute to a standard fence, so the PVC upgrade is typically your cost. We’ll quote PVC and a standard timber fence side by side, so you can compare real numbers.
Are you ready?
-
Buying a fence shouldn’t be stressful. Here’s what to think about before you call, and what happens once you do.
-
You don’t need all the answers. A rough idea is enough, and we’ll help with the rest.
Is it a boundary fence or an internal one? On a shared boundary, talk to your neighbour first. Under the Fencing Act 1978, neighbours usually contribute to a standard fence, and the PVC upgrade is typically your cost.
Roughly how long is it? A guess in metres is fine. Pacing it out or sending a photo helps.
What style are you leaning towards? Woodgrain, white, beige, lattice-top, semi-privacy, picket or ranch rail. Not sure? Let’s talk about it.
Is there anything special about the site? Slopes, an old fence to remove, trees, gates, or a pool nearby. Pool fences have stricter rules, so tell us early.
Do you have a rough budget in mind? PVC usually costs more on day one than timber. We’ll quote it side by side with a standard timber fence so you can compare real numbers.
